Taught by Hopi professor and author Matthew Sakiestewa Gilbert, this course examines the history of Hopi long-distance running from ancient times to the modern era. It centers on the cyclical aspect of ceremonial races, migration stories, community responsibility, and modernity. Students will also learn about Olympic silver medalist Louis Tewanima and other Indian boarding school athletes from the Phoenix Indian School, Teller Institute, and Sherman Institute. Furthermore, the course highlights Hopi runner Nicholas Qomawunu’s participation in the 1928 Bunion Derby and ends with Hopi High’s championship teams, accomplished women runners, and advocacy runs carrying prayers for rain.
